Vinny DeCarlo learned young that a face can tell him things no one should know.
How close death is.
Pieces of the good someone has done. The damage they carry. The things they hide.
Even photographs work. An old picture can tell Vinny whether the person in it is alive right now.
When that person dies, something disappears.
The face remains.
The connection does not.
So Vinny learns not to look.
Then he meets Elena Russo.
She becomes the one person he allows completely into his life.
One day, her face tells him she has nine days.
Doctors find nothing. Tests find nothing. Vinny warns her anyway.
Nine days later, Elena is dead.
That changes him.
Vinny retreats behind dark glasses, locked gates, delivery instructions, and machines that arrive without their owners. The fewer faces he sees, the less he has to know.
For decades, it almost works.
Then the ability starts changing.
Death can move. Connections appear between people. Some disappear when a body dies.
Others do not.
And as Vinny approaches the end of his own life, he begins to suspect he has misunderstood what the faces have been showing him all along.
Then Vinny dies.
And for the first time in his life, he cannot look away.
The Last Face is a dark supernatural thriller about isolation, grief, consequence, and what may remain of us after the body is finished.
Death was never the end of the connection.
It was the part Vinny could not see yet.
